Description
Title: Original photograph of the Johnson-Jeffries boxing match, July 4, 1910
Author: **
Description: Original albumen photograph, mounted to board. 17x23 cm (6¾x9"). Captioned within photograph, "Dana Photo S.F. No. 63. The crowd at the Ringside. Reno, July 4."The heavyweight bought between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries was originally scheduled to take place in San Francisco. Less than a month prior to the scheduled July 4, 1910 fight, San Francisco Governor James Gillette withdrew his support for the fight, and a new venue was found in Reno. For the first time ever, an arena was constructed for a single fight. On July 4, Johnson overwhelmed his opponent, in one of the most controversial boxing matches in American history. This photograph shows Jeffries (dubbed "The Great White Hope") and Johnson (the first African American heavyweight champion), in the ring together, every seat in the open-air arena filled.
