Note: Joachim Pissarro in his letter states: “Camille Pissarro showed great interest in landscape drawing after his permanent move to France in 1855, and was greatly influenced by Corot and the Barbizon school during the period of about 1855-1869. Paysage d’automne shares similarities with two drawings reproduced in the Bretell & Lloyd drawings catalogue, number 52 from 1859 and number 53, both of which depict landscape studies of La Roche-Guyon. The watercolour Paysage d’automne relates to these drawings in that they both share finely hatched lines contained within delicate outline of the trees, blending linear outline and tonal modeling. The watercolour blurs some of the pencil outline of the trees, blending linear outline and interior hatching but pencil is clearly visible under the watercolour, the colour of which accentuates the tonal modeling that the pencil indicates in the drawings reproduced in the Bretell & Lloyd catalogue.”
