Lot of (41) 1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin Tobacco Cards including 8 Hall of Famers

In 1887, D. Buchner & Co. of New York, following the lead set by Goodwin & Co. as well as a few other competitors, sought to capitalize on the use of picture cards as a viable way to promote their tobacco products. Their effort resulted in one of the largest color litho sets of the nineteenth century. Designated today as N284, the set, believed to consist of over 500 cards, includes sports and non-sports subjects as varied as Police Inspectors, Jockeys, Actors, and leading Baseball Players. To date, 143 different baseball players have been catalogued. This recently discovered rare cache of 41 1887 Buchner Gold Coin cards is visually impressive. Thirty-two baseball players are included with cards ranging from P to VG+ with about 2/3 VG or better in appearance. Baseball players are: Andrews (Waist), Anson (HOF, VG look w/some trimming), Barkley, Brouthers (HOF, Fielding, VG), Bushong, Carroll (WAS), Carruthers, Clements, Comisky (HOF, VG), Connor (HOF, Hands/Face, VG Front), Dailey, Denny (Knees), Dorgan (RF), Esterbrook, Farrell (Hands/Knees), Glasscock (Fielding), Gleason, Hankinson, Hanlon (HOF, G-VG), Healy, Keefe (HOF, No Ball, G-VG w/water stain), Kelly (HOF, Catcher, VG), Kennedy, Kilroy, M'Greachy, Miller, Morrissy, Mulvey, Nicol, Pfeffer, Polhemus, Robinson (StL), Ryan, Seery (Rt. Shoulder), Shomberg, Smith, Sullivan (CHI), Sullivan (StL), Thompson (HOF, Belt, G-VG), Whitney (WAS), Wood (Rt. Shoulder). Also included are nine Police & Actors.
