Description
George Washington: A Superbly Provenanced Hair Lock. This wonderful lock consisting of approximately fifteen hairs is presented just as it was framed in 1921, together with a detailed statement of provenance signed by William Lanier Washington. It was part of a lock cut shortly after Washington's inauguration and given to his niece Jane Washington. A continuous chain of ownership is traced down to William Lanier Washington. The back of the frame is inscribed by his wife in 1924: "To our good friend T.J. Oakley Rhinelander as a little Christmas memento from Adele Lanier Washington." Below the inscription, Rhinelander has written a note intended for his executor: "To be returned to him or her after my death. T.J. Rhinelander." The Rhinelander's were a wealthy old line New York family. Interestingly, they once owned the building which now houses Tiffany's on Fifth Avenue, which they traded to the jeweler for a diamond necklace in the early 1900s.
