Description
Wilkes and Hancock: Revolutionary War Era Engravings. This lot has two engravings of American interest. The first measures 5" x 8" and is titled "Malice and Fortitude". An armed mob ("Malice"), representing various segments of British society accost the figure of John Wilkes ("Fortitude"), who is shielded by a picket fence labeled "The Pales of English Liberty" while being crowned with a laurel wreath by Fame. A quote from Shakespeare appears below. There is some loss to the left and right edges, not affecting the plate. The other item is a 4.5" x 7" engraving (mounted to a larger sheet), titled "His Excy. John Hancock, Esq; Late President of the American Congress." It is signed by J. Norman.
