***The first published work by Cavalieri, which introduced the use of logarithms to Italy. It also contains valuable contributions to the study of spherical triangles. Cavalieri was a student of Galileo's protégé Benedetto Castelli. He introduced Cavalieri to Galileo, and they exchanged a considerable amount of correspondence. Galileo was impressed by him, and recommended him for a lectureship at Bologna, commenting that "few, if any, since Archimedes, have delved as far and as deep into the science of geometry" (DSB III, 149)..
