[Galilei (Galileo)] and Mario Guiducci. Discorso delle comete...,woodcut printer's device on title, 2 diagrams, woodcut head-pieces and initials, light spotting to title and dedication, small ink stamp of the Galletti Collection on title, bookplate of Baron Landau on front pastedown, 18th century mottled calf, gilt, worn at extremities with splitting to upper hinge, [Riccardi I 511], small 4to, Florence, Pietro Cecconcelli, 1619. The first edition of Galileo's preliminary exposition on comets, the work which subsequently led to the composition of his celebrated Saggiatore. The appearance of three comets in 1618 had excited great interest throughout Europe; amongst the many works written on these comets was one by the Jesuit mathematician Orazio Grassi (see lot 9). Galileo, suffering from ill-health, and perhaps cautious after his unsuccessful challenge to Papal authority in 1616, dictated his views on comets to his pupil Guiducci, and this the resulting work was published under Guiducci's name.
***A very scarce edition, with only three records found at auction since 1978 (Honeyman in 1979, Riccardi in 1986 and Frank S. Streeter in 2007)..
