Description

[Königsberg (Johannes Müller von], "Johannes Regiomontanus" and Georg von Peuerbach. Epitoma in Almagestum Ptolemaei, edited by Caspar Grosch and Stephan Römer, xylographic title, numerous woodcut initials, 279 woodcut diagrams, full-page wood-engraving depicting Ptolemy and Regiomontanus seated beneath an Armillary sphere within woodcut border printed in black and decorated with flowers & vines, lacking the bifolium containing Baptista Abiosus' epistle, as in most copies, occasional old ms. marginalia and ownership inscription on title, browning to a1-a2, subtle restoration to title, antique-style modern limp vellum with richly tooled gilt frames and fleuron, spine gilt, remains of green silk ties, [Grolier/Horblit 89; Norman 1565; PMM 40, "Ptolemy Expounded"; Goff R-111], folio (295 x 207 mm.), Venice, Johannes Hamman for the editors, 31 August 1496. The excellent full-page wood-engraved illustration would become the model for Peuerbach's Theoricae novae planetarum by Oronce Finé and for other notable French works.

***The first printed edition of Ptolemy's encyclopedia of astronomy, the Almagest. The edition was initially conceived by Peuerbach, under the patronage of Cardinal Bessarion, working from a 12th century translation of Gerard of Cremona, but passed onto Regiomontanus upon Peuerbach's demise. Epitoma is significant both as a representation of Ptolemaic astronomy and as a major contribution to Renaissance astronomy, containing new techniques, methods, observations and critical reflections. The work was to have a direct impact on the theories of Copernicus, who verified for example its observations about certain peculiarities in Ptolemy's theory of the moon's motion..
