Description
Brush the Mystic, Oriental and Occidental Magic, c. 1920 Half sheet, Goes Litho., Chicago, linen mounted & restored. 28.25" x 21"
Brush was a favorite on both the Chautauqua and Lyceum circuit, part of America's vaudeville and entertainment world in the 1920s. This poster features a most fantastic alligator. Posters depicting a witches' boiling cauldron were a staple of the illusionist's art, with origins going back to the staging of Shakespeare's famous witches' chant in Macbeth.
Orientalist magic shows became the rage at a certain point, arguably starting with a real Chinese magician, Ching Ling Foo and his magician competitors Theo Baumberg, William Robinson, and others. Western magicians vied to create faux-Asian personas and characters as well as Orientalist illusions and shadow work. NO RESERVE
