painted with a scene by Claudius Herr (1775-1838) after Anthony van Dyck's 'Samson and Delilah' showing Samson being taking away from her by the soldiers, signed lower right Herr, with a broad rim of finely gilt foliate borders and panels alternating with grisaille cherub ovals against a bright blue ground
shield mark in blue, impressed S / Il8, 36cm wide, reverse sprayed
This version of van Dyck's painting of Samson and Delilah (also known as The Taking of Samson) is in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, where Claudius Herr is known to have gone to copy many of the Old Masters.
