Born in Oregon, and after coming to Texas at a young age, Holmes studied with an artist in Galveston and at Texas Christian University. He became a member of the Fort Worth Painters Club in 1924, and won first prize in landscape at the State Fair of Texas in 1925. Later, Holmes moved to San Angelo and painted all over the United States and in Mexico. It was then that his paintings became highly stylized. Texas Landscape with Bluebonnets is a fairly rare example due in part to its large size and the fact that it is dated.
