Property from a Princely collection
Nephrite (pounamu) was highly prized amongst the Maori, and ownership of such ornaments marked the wearer as a person of wealth and status. Kuru were worn either suspended by a cord from the pierced lobe of the ear or around the neck as a pendant by prominent Maori men and women. This pendant is quite exceptional in its impressive size.
