However , upon closer scrutiny they go well beyond the mere visual shock produced by a sometimes explicit or scatalogcal sense of humor. They display not only close connections with similar works in the history of art but also a good deal of iconographical innovation" (V. Lucas' oeuvre of confrontational self-portraiture and genital punning has been acclaimed for its ribaldry., Several moving photographic self-portraits imply a grudging introspection, as if she were feeling a need to question her façade of toughness. "I think each artwork is a description of something quite particular. I don't decide exactly what I'm going to describe, it's not as simple as that I make the things that I can make. Partly because I want to make them, but sometimes, once they start happening they tell me what I'm describing. It's a mixture. Things are pushing forwards between me and how things actually shape up. What finally gets described in the art-work" (ibid.).
