White Cube, LondonIn Gary Hume's paintings from the late 1990s, such as Rose, he explores the complex relationship between drawing and painting. His deliciously colored and unashamedly sensual surfaces, employ a clever textural effect. From afar, the compositions may appear facile, but upon closer look, the brushwork reveals itself to be fluidly applied and the depth of texture is endless. While the images are purged of inessentials, these paintings seem to depict fragments, simply delineated; they encourage the viewer to follow the line, which draws and redraws contours across the painting. Hume explains, "One day I was looking at the pictures and instead of seeing the planes within the boundaries, I saw the lines. And it was a revelation to me; I thought, bloody hell, I've been doing this for years and I've never seen the lines" (L. Head & D. Barrett, eds., Gary Hume (New Art Up-Close 1), London 2004, p. 46).

Painting on wood or aluminum since the beginning of his career, Hume settled on a special technique using common household paints and his paintings still consist of large opaque planes and sharply delineated outlines. As he explains, "I found that gloss paint suits me entirely, and its qualities still intrigue me. It's vicious and fluid and feels like a pool. It's highly reflective, which means there are layers of looking. You look at the picture, and you look at the surface, then you look at the reflection in the surface behind you, then you look at yourself" (G. Hume quoted in E. Schneider, ed., Gary Hume, Bregenz 2004, p. 16).

Hume's richly saturated paintings on sleek metal draw upon a minimalist aesthetic in the way that the blocks of color comprising his imagery, create a type of image architecture. However, Hume's canvas surfaces saturated with creamy layers of inert household gloss, push away any theoretic connection to minimalism. Hume states that, "I don't ask what painting is, the question has no relevance to me. I like its absolute basicness. It's a very human activity; we've been doing it for thousands of years. I'm an ancient Egyptian with caveman ancestry." (G. Hume quoted in S. Kent, Shark Infested Waters, London 1994, p. 38).
