Description
Ca. 300-200 BC. Probably part of a larger vessel, this pottery disk features a either a goddess (likely Persephone) or a Nereid (Sea Nymph) riding a Hippocamp ("Horse-Monster" in Greek, "Seahorse" in English) in high relief. Custom stand. Piece itself measures 3-3/8"D.
Provenance: Ex-Byron Farwell Collection acquired in Southern Italy by Capt. Farwell in 1944/45.
