Description
(1893-1969) Marshal of the R.A.F. After serving as a squadron commander during the First World War, he became Director of Staff Duties and then Assistant Chief of the Air Staff at the Air Ministry. During World War II, he served as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Fighter Command and Air Officer Commanding in Chief of RAF Middle East Command where he advocated Operation Accolade, a planned British amphibious assault on Rhodes and the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea. War-date air combat report, 1p. legal folio, [France], Feb. 19, 1918 concerning ROBERT A. GROSVENOR (1895-1953), an RFC fighter ace credited with 16 aerial victories. His victory tally was split evenly between enemy aircraft destroyed and those driven down, at eight each. Grosvenor reports, in part: '...I followed and got directly behind him in the sun...I fired a burst from my Vickers and the E.A. went down in a vertical nose dive. I watched him crash into the forest....a V-strutter came straight at me...[I] fired about 50 rounds with my Lewis...E.A. rolled over onto his back and started to fall quite out of control...' Signed by Douglas at bottom as Major and Commander of 84 Squadron. File holes, lightly toned, else very good.
