Item Details
Description
A FINE AMERICAN STOCKED ORIGINAL COLONIAL NEW ENGLAND FLINTLOCK LONG-FOWLER, ca. 1750’s. FRENCH & INDIAN WAR TO AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD : In very fine+ original flintlock condition. Round, pin-fastened, unmarked barrel but proofs looks like a well worn R.W cartouche stamp between oval proofs, of Richard Wilson, and the breech has circular rings as found on some early R.W. barrels. It is a heavy-gauge, sighted, 48.5 inches .63 caliber smoothbore barrel with a very good touch-hole and a brown-gray age-patina. The stock is a finely formed full-stock, classic New England form of exc. tiger maple and a long fowler form with a deeply fluted “Roman Nose” butt, and “ banded form” ramrod pipes. American made sheet and cast brass furniture, mounts—of traditional mid-18th century form. The buttplate with a long stepped tang, three (3) American-made banded form brass ramrod pipes. Two simple small brass plates in place of a sideplate. The lock has a nice smooth brown/gunmetal-gray patina matching the original gooseneck hammer. It is in overall very fine original flintlock condition. The iron surfaces of the barrel are with a smooth, mild pitted brown, gunmetal-gray patina and the expected light scattered pitting at the touch hole. Has a wonderful tiger maple American heavy stock (similar to Wolfgang Haga, Reading, PA) with a strong surface and finish, sharp contours, some scattered light handling marks. The brass furniture with a lightly toned look has a great age patina and smooth surfaces. It is a very nice example of Colonial, American Revolutionary War Period New England Flintlock Long Fowler, circa. 1750’s. Complete with an old, possible original, wooden ramrod. From an old N.Y. state house estate collection. This fowler was collected approximately 60+ years ago in the area of Clarence, N.Y. (approximately 20 miles away from Niagara Falls) and was just recently released to the market by the collector’s widow. It’s overall length is 65.5 inches. Hard to find this nice with minimal ownership transfers and handling. [ Third party shipping-see Terms for local shippers. ]
