Michael Scott Cherepak is from northern Indiana. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute before receiving a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He worked professionally as an environmental designer in Dayton, OH and at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City before a 20 year career as an architectural illustrator. Specializing in watercolor illustrations, he worked for dozens of firms on architectural projects all over the world.
Michael's current works are a collection of floral inspired pieces that are both a reflection of, and an escape from, a chaotic world. Previous work had been more representational, but in working, the images became more telling. A simple subject to start, the flowers lead to mesmerizing compositional puzzles of color and shape. They are full, luscious, and chaotic, begging to be reined in. With a love for color, an affirmation of life comes through. Challenging color relationships are tested while an affinity for complexity pushes forward as forms become interlocking. The artist tries to hold it together and let go.
Michael works from a mind set that is passionate about the people and events that are personal, caring for the details of daily life. Flowers spark the joy, variety, and play, which may represent each day. They are ready subjects, rich in visual possibility.
