Description
Portrait de Jacqueline au Chapeau de Paille, is a linocut, on Arches paper, made in 1962. It is signed and numbered 9 of 50 in pencil. Published by Galerie Louise Leiris in Paris, France.
Picasso met Jacqueline when she was just 26 years old and working at the artist's ceramics studio at the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris, France. Picasso produced approximately 150 color linocuts during the 1950s and 1960s, and the most detailed, bold, and impressive works to come out of this time period are those featuring Jacqueline.
Portrait de Jacqueline au Chapeau de Paille was created the year after Picasso and Jacqueline were married. He captures her youth, beauty and sensuality with both rigid and soft lines and bright colors; her dark, doll-like eyes seem to hold direct contact with the viewer. It tells the beginnings of a 12 year love story, a span in which Pablo Picasso created over 400 images of his wife, more than any other woman of his past.
