Because of the small size of the slices of wood, it is often necessary to combine several of the pieces to produce the full image. The image is not cut into the block; it is the unwanted portion that is cut away, and the lines to be printed are in relief. Only one color ink could be applied at a time, so each sheet had to go through the press as many times as there were colors. The shading of colors in the images is so subtle and so varied, that it is hard to believe they were made by carved blocks. One can appreciate the amount of precision and work that went into each of these woodcuts.
