B. WHISONANT & ED TOVREA ACCOUNT OF AVIATOR BET
Interesting ephemera grouping detailing the war time fighter pilots and best friends, Bill Whisonant and Ed Tovrea. The tale comes to light when Ed sends a note to Bill from Stalag III the first news from Ed since his capture. In the note he reminds Bill of there bet, the world press picked up on the story and this grouping has the original press release which reads as follows, "London-- Lieutenant William B. Whisonant of Vineland , New Jersey, will have to wait a good spell before he collects on a twenty dollar bet he won from Lieutenant Edward A. Tovrea of Phoenix, Arizona. On arriving in England the two Army Fliers bet that if either was shot down, he would pay the other. Tovrea was shot down during the Dieppe raid in mid August and is now a prisoner of the Germans and Whisonant has just received this message--- " You win twenty bucks. Come and get it" Signed Ed. This was picked up by numerous newspapers copies of several are included as well as two letters from Whisonant to Ed's Mother, Whisonant was a highly decorated flyer receiving Silver Star, Dfc, and air medals, Purple heart, and a detailing of these awards are included. The most amusing item is a 11 by 16 inch check to Lt. Col. B. Whisonant for $60, $20 for each bet lost by Tovrea, first DFC, Whiskey shot down First and First confirmed victory. The check is dated 1946.
