A lithographer and painter, Bowling was born at Quitman, Texas. He began painting in his mid-30's while recovering from an illness. Bowling studied with Alexandre Hogue, Frank Klepper, and with Olin Travis at the Art Institute of Dallas, where he later taught. A founder of the Lone Star Printmakers, he also belonged to the Frank Reaugh Art Club; the Southern States Art League; and the Texas Fine Arts Association. Bowling exhibited in Dallas Allied Arts, the Texas Centennial Exposition, and the Lone Star Printmakers circuits. Evening Clouds shows the strong color and the beginning of the stylization of forms consistent with Bowling's mature style. He often painted rural scenes in both oil and watercolor. This is a particularly fine example of his work and a special opportunity for collectors.
