Item Details
Description
A wonderful American double naval relic cane. The flat knob plated brass handle is 2" high and 1 1/3" across the top. It is engraved: "Presented to A.A. Martin by C.R. Kearns". It sits above a 7/8" silver collar that is engraved: "This cane is wood from the famous rebel iron clad Virginia (U.S. Frigate Merrimac [sp.] )", and then: "The cap is metal from the Spanish cruiser Reina Mercedes". The relic shaft is oak and the piece terminates with a 4" burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 34 3/4" and the condition is very good. It was fashioned ca 1900, and it is a remarkable example that contains relics from two vessels so greatly connected to the naval history of America. Papers on the CSS Virginia (Merrimack) famously involved in the Civil War with the union iron clad Monitor, and the Spanish cruiser Reina Mercedes sunk by the forces of Admiral Dewey at the battle of Manila Bay in 1898, are included with this lot. Estimate: $1500-$2500.
