Description
A RARE PAIR OF 'GYABNYE' RUGS, Southern Tibet, Early 20th Century. 'Gyabnye' or cushion rugs were commissioned only by the wealthiest families or the high lamas. This pair of rugs depicts disembodied heads or Dzeeba(Zeepak), a Tibetan mythical creature. Dzeeba is a rare form of art to be found on the rugs, and being a pair makes it even rarer. There is a slight difference though in design and coloration in parts of each rug, exemplifying the weavers and dyers art. Mix of natural and aniline dyes. Cotton warp, wool weft. 79cm x 50cm, 77cm x 48cm.
