Description
[Aldine Press]. Gaius Julius Caesar. [Opera]. Hoc volumine continentur haec. Commentariorum de bello Gallico libri VIII. Be bello civili pompeiano. libri IIII. De bello Alexandrino. liber I. De bello Africano. liber I. De bello Hispaniensi. liber I. Pictura totius Galliæ, & Hispani... secundum C. Cæsaris Comentarios. Nomina locorum, urbiniumq[ue], & populorum Galliæ, & Hispaniæ, ut olim dicebantur latine, & nunc dicantur, secundum ordinem alphabeti. Pictura Pontis in Rehno. Item Avarici. Alexiæ. Uxelloduni. Massiliæ. [Venice: In aedibus Aldi, et Andreae soceri, January 1518-November 1519]. Second Aldine edition, after the first of 1513 (although the date given on the title page is 1513, the Index is dated 1519, indicating the second edition of 1518-1519). Approximately 6.5 x 3.5 inches. Small octavo. [16], 296 leaves. Italic type. Two double-page woodcut maps, five full-page woodcut illustrations. These woodcuts have been partially hand-colored at a later date. Anchor and dolphin device (Fletcher 6 and 3) on title and each colophon. Capital spaces with guide letters. Near contemporary pigskin over boards (binding stamped "1537"). Binding elaborately stamped in blind on boards, spine lettered and ruled in one compartment on spine with three raised bands, "1518" written in ink on spine and "Caesar" written in ink on fore-edge. A few leaves unopened. The first forty-six leaves bear early manuscript notes (and two small neat drawings). Some typical age-toning and wear to binding, front joint cracking (yet still quite solid), previous owner's ink inscription on front free endpaper, very light damp marking to lower edge of text. Still, an attractive and complete copy. The text reproduces the same preface by Aldus and the architect J. Jucundus, and the same woodcuts are used. Adams C29. Murphy 185. Renouard, Alde, p. 88.
