Description
[Americana Folk Illustration]. [Rev. William Cook]. The Eucleia, Works by... [Salem: William Cook, 1861]. First bound edition of ten pamphlets bound into one volume. Twelvemo. Illustrated with woodcuts by the author. Period binding of cloth over boards with adhered patterned fabric laid over, with printed titles and decoration. Covers and extremities well-worn with abraded edges and moderate loss. Boards are warped, possibly due to dampstaining. Some soiling, light staining, and writing present. Ex-library markings, blind-stamping and removed bookplate. Preliminaries before printed title page of Eucleia, possibly including illustrated title, are excised. Original pamphlet wrappers bound in. Light toning, foxing and offsetting present throughout. Some hand-colored graphite and ink additions. Occasional small tears, rubbing, and bumping to page edges.
Each pamphlet has illustrated colored paper wrappers with several similar illustrations within. Cook illustrates each text with charming, amateurish scenes of civic, natural and domestic life. Generally a very good copy of a scarce and charming item. "These pamphlets were printed by the author, at Salem, are illustrated with woodcuts, also by the author, and are amusing for their absurdity" Sabin 16297.
