First Edition."A Paper Read Before the Cincinnati Society of Ex-Army and Navy Officers, January 3d, 1884" by Anderson, offering a description of Texas prior to the Civil War "as described by a Unionist" (Raines). Anderson bred horses at his ranch at San Antonio. In 1861he was arrested and imprisoned for his Union sympathies, he escaped to the North and served as a Colonel in the 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He later was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio and served as Governor of Ohio following the death of Governor John Brough. Raines, p.10.
