Item Details
Description
German Silver Oval Serving Tray, Bruckmann & Söhne, Heilbronn, for Widow Posen of Berlin, early 20th century
inscribed Prinz Heinrich Flug 1913, length 19 in — 48.2 cm, 33.8 oz. — 1052 grams

Note:
From 1911 to 1914, a reliability and reconnaisance competition on the Upper Rhine tested aviators and the latest German flight models, which were largely military. In 1913, the competition became known as the Prinz-Heinrich-Flug in honour of Prince Heinrich of Prussia, who took over patronage that year. The multi-stage flight ran from Wiesbaden to Strasbourg with a reconnaissance flight back. Lieutenant Ferdinand von Hiddessen won the reliability test in 1913 with a Mars monoplane. Second in that section, but best in the reconnaissance exercise and declared overall winner, was Lieutenant Ernst Canter, who later achieved fame as the “Flieger von Tannenberg”.
