Mathew Brady Photograph of Gen. John A. Rawlins' Horse, Cold Harbor, VA June 1864
Albumen photograph of a young African American servant mounted atop Gen. J.A. Rawlins' horse, taken on June 14, 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA, with Brady's Washington imprint on mount below image and "Frank Blair" & Jerry written at lower left, plus Horse & Servant of Gen. Rawlins written on paper lining on back of frame. Presumably, Rawlins' horse was named after Francis P. Blair, Jr., an American politician and Union Army General, and the servant's name is Jerry. 2.75 x 4 in., mounted and housed in original frame, 9 x 10.5 in.
Lots 25, 28, 32, and 228 descended directly in the family of William Wrenshall Smith, who was a close friend and first cousin by marriage to U.S. Grant, and who rode with Grant as a Volunteer Aide-de-Camp during the Civil War. Smith was first cousins to Julia Dent Grant, and he and Grant were quite close from the time of Grant's marriage until his death.
