Description
Bodil Manz (1943, Denmark)

Frozen
2001
Porcelain, wood, paint; ht. 4 in.

This work is one of only three in which the Danish ceramist Bodil Manz has collaborated with her daughter, Ceclie Manz, also an artist. It is an exciting work in that the wood frame creates in 3-D some of the conjunctions and interstices that Bodil achieves in her pot by her graphic 2-D use of decals, which she cuts and attaches to her paper thin porcelain forms. She attaches these elements both outside and inside the vessel and given the translucency of this porcelain, they can be seen through the vessel wall as pale shadows. Bodil slip casts these forms, but once fired they are by no means uniform. Manz slightly over-fires the work which causes the form to distort, slump slightly and for the rim to become asymmetrical.

Exhibited: Garth Clark Gallery, New York

Reference: Axelsson, Svend, Clark, Garth and Raethinge-Ninka, Anne Wolden. Bodil Manz: The Ceramicist. Copenhagen: Nordisk Forlag Arnold Busck, 2008. This work is illustrated on page 69.
