Craftsman Auctions & Early 20th C. Design

On September 27 and 28, Rago Arts will host an auction dedicated to the furnishings and design of the early 1900s. Exceptional property includes George Ohr, Marblehead, Roycroft, and Tiffany; important European pottery by Zsolnay and Amphora. American art pottery lots include a collection of ceramics from the Strong Museum, Rochester, NY; a large selection of Dedham and CKAW pottery; and vessels and tiles by Grueby, Rookwood, Newcomb College, Frederick Rhead, California Faience, Fulper, Weller, Merrimac, Teco, Van Briggle, Pisgah Forest, Arequipa, NDSM, Roseville, Volkmar and Clewell. Over 100 fine examples of mission furniture will be offered by Stickley, Limbert, Roycroft, Lifetime and Old Hickory. Among the great lighting are many fine reverse-painted Handel lamps. Tiffany Studios includes a Curtain Border floor lamp, as well as a spectacular drop-head Dragonfly, Black-Eyed Susan, Acorn, and Pomegranate table lamps. Lighting from Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Fulper, Benedict, Duffner & Kimberly, Phoenix, Pairpoint, Suess, Gustav Stickley, Dirk van Erp and Roycroft round out the selection. For Continental and British work, Rago Arts expects particular attention to be paid to a Moorcroft/Shreve bonbonniere, a variety of Zsolnay ceramics, and vessels and decorative items by Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel/Amphora. Art glass by the workshops of Rene Lalique, Daum, Loetz, Emile Galle, the Wiener Werkstatte and American makers Steuben, Quezal, and Durand will be presented. Metalwork and silver of the period are represented by Dirk van Erp, Heintz, Jauchens, Roycroft, Charles Rohlfs, Jarvie, and Marie Zimmerman; Liberty & Co. pewter and silver; and a fine Kalo hammered sterling faceted coffee set. Also of note: woodblock prints, paintings and drawings; period textiles, including a large collection of silk velvet curtains and portieres; stained glass windows; Scottish and Persian rugs; and the photos of Edward Sheriff Curtis.
