Kenneth L. Freed Collection

Over 900 works of contemporary art owned by renowned collector and curator Kenneth L. Freed will be sold at an unreserved auction on Saturday, November 18, 2006 11:00 am ESTat the Rago Arts and Auction Center in Lambertville, NJ. Freed, by dint of his untiring commitment to and passion for new and emerging art, assembled, over the last twenty-five years, a broad and informed collection. This sale - primarily from the 80's through very recent times - represents some two-third's of Mr. Freed's collection. The vast majority of the material was purchased on the primary market or directly from the artists themselves, many of whom he befriended. He actively sought out seminal and key work by artists relatively unknown at the time, whose work was thereafter much sought after, including Kevin Appel, Tam Van Tran, and Udomsak Krisanamis. The collection also includes works which Mr. Freed collected for their historical significance relative to the work of these later, emerging artists. These include works by Alighiero e Boetti and Pino Pascali - precedents for key works by Tony Feher and a number of California based artists. Mr. Freed has called much of his collection "California Arte Povera." The unreserved sale includes a very important selection of works by women artists, such as Lee Lozano, Sylvia Plimack Mangold and Ree Morton. Taken as a group, they illuminate some key threads in the collection, which carry through key works by Liz Larner and Liz Craft. Among the sale’s other highlights are drawings by Jutta Koether, Graham Little and Robert Beck, paintings by Sharon Ellis, Robert Overby, Linda Besemer, Thoralf Knobloch and Jim Shaw and sculptures by Charles LeDray and Thomas Kiesewetter. There are also examples of work by video artists such as Slater Bradley. In addition to his contributions as an art collector, curator and patron, Freed is recognized as a writer, scholar, and intrepid traveler. He has been involved with a number of Boston based organizations, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Lyric Opera, and the Boston Latin School Association. The Rago Arts and Auction Center is located between New York City and Philadelphia in the scenic Delaware River Valley town of Lambertville, New Jersey.
