Historic Quitman Antebellum Estate
Stevens Auction Company is pleased to announce the commission to sell at public auction the Real Estate and contents of the Trotter-Byrd Antebellum home owned by Mr. Harry H. Wheat and the late Sarah Jane Wheat. This beautiful historic gem built in 1852 is the only to escape the wrath of General Sherman during his occupation of Meridian and the surrounding area. This magnificent structure was built by William B. Trotter, originally of Tennessee, who was an attorney in Quitman. In 1845 Trotter was a candidate for fourth district attorney and colonel of the thirty-first regiment of the Mississippi Militia; later in 1847 he was elected brigadier general. Trotter married Elizabeth Lee Terrell, of Virginia, in 1846, whose mother, Frances Lewis Terell, was the granddaughter of Fielding Lewis and Catherine Washington, first cousin of founding father and first United States President George Washington. It is because of this family connection to Washington that it was spared the destruction by fire. It remains today as the only standing Antebellum structure in Quitman and one of three in Clarke County.
We will be offering at public auction the real estate consisting of a 5500 square foot Greek revival home which has three bedrooms and 2 baths along with a 900 square foot two story pool house and beautiful 20 x 40 pool.
