Naylor Collection of Early Photography

It is an honor to present over 300 daguerreotypes and early photography items from the collection of Jack Naylor. To answer those who might ask “I thought Jack wanted to keep the collection together” the answer is Jack does want to keep the main collection of over 30,000 items together and it is still available for private sale. Presented in this catalog are items Jack considered not part of the main collection including the phenomenal documents from Southworth & Hawes that Jack recollects purchasing from David Feigenbaum. While it is tempting to speculate about the lives of the sitters and include more flowery descriptions, I prefer to let the images speak for themselves and let the collector place their own opinions upon them. Each image has certain subtleties that will appear to all collectors and while only a few have been directly attributed to Southworth & Hawes I am sure others will be attributed to their hand or the works of other great daguerreotypists. To hold the document that allowed Albert Sands Southworth to open his space at 5 1/2 Tremont St. and modify it with a skylight to make the best daguerreotypes in America is a powerful experience. That experience can only be enhanced by holding an intimate portrait of Alice Mary Hawes at age 4 in your hands. Beyond their great works is the mammoth plate (11x13) of Whipple believed to be one of two known American plates of this size in existence. (The other being in Jack Naylor’s main collection). I encourage you to come to the gallery during preview week and experience these wonderful images in person.
